German Navy successfully tests Israeli LORA missile system in the North Atlantic
The German Navy has successfully completed a double test of Israel Aerospace Industries' LORA ballistic missile system, launching the weapon from an operational vessel in the North Atlantic
The German Navy conducted the classified test as part of its OPEX operational testing program, an initiative designed to support the "Marine 2035 and Beyond" program aimed at preparing the fleet for current and future security threats, IAI said in a statement. The missile, launched from a German Navy vessel equipped with the system's command and launcher carriage, successfully navigated its trajectory and struck its target with precision in both test scenarios, meeting all objectives.
Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, inspector of the German Navy, called the test a historic achievement. "With the successful launch of a ballistic missile last night in the North Atlantic, we have made naval history. I am extremely pleased with this achievement," Kaack said, according to Bild and a German Armed Forces Instagram post. "The system can be successfully deployed from our units, and its potential range surpasses anything we have previously known. For the protection of Germany and our allies, this test represents a new chapter in terms of deterrence and readiness at sea."
IAI Chairman Boaz Levy called the test "an unprecedented achievement for IAI and the Ministry of Defense," noting it took place in Germany, "the country where the world's first ballistic missile was invented." He said the achievement builds on Israel's Arrow-3 missile defense system already stationed on German soil, further strengthening the countries' defense partnership.
IAI CEO Guy Bar Lev said the naval LORA system was "designed to provide precision strike capabilities at depth, even in challenging operational environments," calling it "one of the most advanced and operationally proven ballistic missile systems in the world."

LORA, which stands for "Long Range Attack," is an Israeli-developed short-range ballistic missile system delivered in a launch container for rapid deployment from naval vessels. According to Bild, two German frigates were deployed to waters between Ireland and Iceland for the test, with the missile system offering a range exceeding 500 kilometers (310 miles).

IAI markets the system as capable of striking "strategic targets deep within enemy territory from mobile or maritime platforms," with the ability to destroy a detected target within ten minutes. The Israeli military has reportedly used the system, including an air-launched version, in strikes in Lebanon and against Iran.
The test comes as Germany moves to expand its long-range precision strike capabilities amid heightened concern over Russian aggression, following recent drone incidents including an attack on Leipzig Airport that Berlin has blamed on Russia. Germany is also finalizing a separate deal to acquire US Tomahawk missiles, with a range of up to 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles), following an agreement reached on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Ankara.
