Trump envoys Kushner, Witkoff arrive in Moscow with new Ukraine peace proposal
The two were met by Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev and are expected to travel to Kyiv on Sunday
U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Saturday as the Trump administration launched a renewed effort to broker an end to the war in Ukraine.
The pair were met at Vnukovo airport by Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who has participated in their previous meetings with President Vladimir Putin. A motorcade carrying the three later headed toward central Moscow.
President Donald Trump said Friday that the envoys were carrying a new proposal intended to end the conflict, although he offered no details.
“We have an idea for peace,” Trump told reporters, adding that there “may be a good chance” of reaching an agreement.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kushner and Witkoff were expected to travel to Kyiv on Sunday following their talks in Moscow. It would be their first visit to the Ukrainian capital during the war.
The diplomatic push comes despite deep divisions over the terms of any settlement. The Kremlin said Friday that Putin’s demands for Ukraine to relinquish four regions claimed by Moscow and abandon its ambition to join NATO remained “unshakeable,” while both sides have intensified long-range strikes in recent weeks.
